I am an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. I hold a joint appointment in the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), and am also affiliated with Linguistics and the AI Interdisciplinary Institute (AIM). I am a member of the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing (CLIP) Lab at UMD.

I am a researcher in the fields of natural language processing and artificial intelligence. My research interests lie in the areas of computational semantics and pragmatics, commonsense reasoning, and challenges of social and cultural fairness in AI. In lay terms, I am interested in how language technologies (like LLMs) capture not just the literal meaning of a text, but also how they use information in text to draw complex inferences about real-world situations, weigh evidence and make judgments under uncertainty, and ultimately succeed (or fail) to meet the practical needs of users of different backgrounds. My lab investigates methods to both advance these capabilities in models, and to scientifically measure/evaluate them.

I am a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins (2019) and a B.S. in Computer Science from Yale (2013).
